I watched Eraserhead for the second time tonight. The first time I watched it it was really hard to get into and I looked more for the story. By the end I had respect for it because I felt like I was an 'eraserhead'. This time I can see how complicated a film it is. It's really more of a painting than a film, which is somewhat a relief to counter the disturbing imagery. If you want, I could give you my theories on what the different symbols mean. I enjoyed watching this film again and I felt at home in a work of art like when one visits a museum. It becomes very dark at places and difficult to stomach, but there are some comedic moments which help you stay above the surface of despair. This idea may seem absurd to some people, but it is really a love story. It's also just a dream, which the film keeps trying to remind you. It warns you not to take anything you see not too seriously. It's a great film; definitely not something I'd want to watch again for quite a while but worth seeing.
