My dog really responds to noises and facial expressions. It's very effective. It's the only thing I've discovered that I can use to make her quit biting me. Sometimes I growl at her, sometimes I make loud, grumbling, gobbledey-goo sounds, and sometimes I hiss like a cat and scratch at the air in a threatening manner. She turns tail if I do it convincingly. Before, if I'd say "No" when she was doing something bad, she might stand her ground, get down on her belly, and start barking at me. I never realized all I have to do is just walk up to her looking slightly menacing to get her to retreat. The more she sees her growling and barking is ineffective, the less she tries it, and I hope soon my "No" will carry more weight than before. I couldn't believe it when a firm "No" got her to stop biting me tonight; that's never worked before. In the past, she's been relentless when she's in the mood and she's made my bed her domain. I've tried the nice guy approach; went as far as hiding under my covers and yelping, but she just keeps coming and coming. Scaring her works like a charm, though. Sometimes she growls back and we get into a growling match, but I always win because I think of so many different noises and facial expressions to make that I always find one that catches her off guard. I know I'm making progress when I see her hesitate before lunging at me, losing her faith in her ability to stand her ground. Sometimes, and this really cracks me up when it happens, I can just see the thought pop into her head to do something bad, and all I have to do is look at her a certain way and she acts guilty and runs off. I'm really grateful I found something that works because she's getting really wild, trying to grab everything in sight and carry it off.
